Jake, Reese, and Keltin
This is Mitch Morgan's exclusive interview with Jake, Reese, and Keltin, real life characters from 122 Rules, the debut novel by L. Jay Scott. Jake is starring in the follow-up novel to 122. After reading the interview, go back to the main page.
Mitch: Good morning, Bradford family. Of everyone in the book, arguably, the two of you have the roughest roads to travel. Jake, you got injured, beat up by thugs, had a long and painful bout with drugs, ostracized by Sam's ex-wife, the list goes on and on. Reese, you got married and move to The Cove, but your husband was called away to fight for our country when he was killed. Then you fell into what sounded like a deep depression and almost lost your house. You lost your husband and Keltin will never know his dad.
Jake: It has all the makings of a country western song doesn't it? Look, we all go through trying times in our lives. Mine sucked worse than others, but not as bad as most of the rest of the world's daily lives. A lot of my problems were self-induced and I have paid a heavy price for that, but I came out of it. So many people have no chance to overcome their problems.
Reese: Agreed. In my case, I supported my husband to stand for the country we believe in. We both knew the risks, but he wouldn't have been able to stand the person he would have been if he hadn't gone off to serve and that would have been worse. Yes, it wasn't just David's sacrifice, but we are no different than any other family around the world whose spouse is serving. We all make sacrificies for the greater good.
Mitch: Reese, you were losing the house and going to move back home with your parents. But then the day of the picnic and the anonymous donor who stepped forward and paid your house off. Did you know who it was? No spoilers here, please.
Reese: Of course, no spoilers. On the surface, no. But in my heart I think I knew all along. But they wanted to stay anonymous, so I let them. Besides how do you repay something that huge?
Jake: It says a lot about the person. It's one thing to do so and announce to the world that you are doing it. That's self-
aggrandizing. But to try and keep it on the down-low, that's class.
Mitch: So you have been married for two years now. Jake you're a former drug addict. How does this affect your relationship?
Jake: I couldn't have asked for a better partner. I've been sober for four years, nine months, and twenty one days. But you're wrong, Mitch, I'm still an addict and always will be. But as long as I remember that and have my family by my side, I'll never go back. You've heard the saying, take it one day at a time, well it's so true. I mark off every day on the calendar that I don't take a pill and I probably always will.
Reese: You had to know, Mitch, it was a huge thing falling in love with someone with Jake's past, especially with Keltin. But he's a good man and I believe in him. Besides if he ever slips up, I'll kick his ass.
Mitch: Jake, you are starring in the follow-up novel to 122 and Reese you are in it too. Excited?
Jake: Ecstatic! This journey has been so much fun.
Reese: I get to follow what happens to this guy after he and his brother part ways.
Jake: In 122 I disappear after Tracy kicks me out and don't show up again until the end of the book, all healed and married. But there is so much that happens between those two points in time.
Reese: Plus, I get to find out what he was like in college. Don't know if we would have gotten along. Being a soccer groupie, party girl isn't really my style.
Jake: You couldn't resist me then, just like you can't now.
Reese: What do I see in you?
Jake: That's the wrong question, darlin'. The right one is: what would you ever do without me?
Reese: Mitch, is there anything else you want to know?
Mitch: Can you tell us what happens in the new book, Jake?
Jake: (laughing) Spoiler! I live. Other than that I can't tell you that, cause the guy writing it even hasn't finished it yet!
Mitch: That's about it for now. Let's get back to the group.
