Norman and Owen
This is Mitch Morgan's exclusive interview with Norman and Owen, real life characters from Norman and the Demon, the debut short story by Deek Rhew. After reading it, go back to the main page to see more interviews.
Mitch: Good morning, Gentlemen. Norman, I'd like to start with you since you play such a pivotal role in the story.
Norman: Good morning, Mitch. Want to say right up front, thank you for minding the time.
Mitch: I know it's important for you to get back to work.
Norman: Communication is one of the most essential services a civilized nation has. Without it there would be chaos.
Mitch: True. Okay, let's get to it. In the very opening scene you're in your house and the storm is blowing.
Owen: That was a serious doosy.
Norman: I'll say!
Mitch: So you decide you're going out even though it's almost a hurricane outside. That's very brave.
Owen: That's one way to put it.
Norman: The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few, Mitch.
Mitch: But ultimately you fail. The mail does not get delivered that day.
Owen: Look, Mitch. Norman risks his life every day to keep the service going. He's the only one that does it here in town and he's got almost a perfect record. How many people can you say have such passion about their work?
Norman: Thank you, dear.
Mitch: Point taken. I admire your dedication, Norman. Okay, let's switch gears. So you, Norman, it's a beautiful day and you're delivering the mail. Everything is going well, until you turn down Lancaster Drive. Tell me about that.
Norman: Uggg, how did I know you were going to go there? Well, at the time, Saundy and I had a...miscommunication and it caused me some stress.
Owen: Some stress? Dear, you couldn't sleep for days after each of your encounters with that sweet little dog. It was really funny, but not funny, you know what I mean, Mitch? Norman thought the dog was a demon. Really.
Mitch: Okay, truth, Norman. Was it really that bad and what happened on that day? Because it seemed like we kind of jumped into the middle of something that had been going on for a while, and here we witness a turning point.
Norman: It's true. I don't know what I was thinking exactly. She scared me, like she was possessed by a demon from hell or something (shaking his head). I remember the episodes, but now when I spend time with her, she's my god-dog you know, I don't see it anymore. Yes, that was a huge turning point for us. I finally gave in and....and....well, Mitch, to be honest I don't really want to talk about it. It's one of the lower points in my life. Saundy and I worked through our differences...eventually.
Mitch: So now you're her Godfather?
Owen: You can't keep the two of them apart. It's like she lives with us. Half the time, Polly has to come over to our house just to visit her own dog. It's very sweet.
Mitch: Owen, you're a romantic...
Owen: Guilty as charged! I love to see people happy and nothing makes them happier than good food and love. Yes, before you even ask, I might know a little bit too much about everyone else's business, but that's just part of the small town life. Besides, I'd like to think that it was my nudging that finally got Sam and Polly together. Romance can be such a rocky road, a little wine and some gentle nudging is sometimes needed to smooth the path.
Mitch: Should I add "Spoiler Alert" to the beginning of this interview?
Owen: (Laughing) Maybe you should!
Mitch: So this relationship between man and canine. Do you see it lasting?
Owen: As if it were meant to be.
